DIFFERENTIATORS

It promotes an innovative, interdisciplinary curriculum that blends technology, information management, and social sciences. It emphasizes critical thinking, problem-solving, and the ethical use of information in a digital society. The iSchool approach encourages collaboration between LIS and other fields such as data science, computer science, and communication studies. Students are exposed to emerging technologies like AI, data analytics, and information security, while also focusing on user-centered design and the impact of information systems on communities. This curriculum prepares graduates to lead in diverse information environments, adapting to the evolving landscape of information and technology.

Experiential learning in Library and Information Science (LIS) emphasizes hands-on, real-world experiences to deepen theoretical knowledge and build practical skills. Students engage in internships, fieldwork, and project-based assignments within libraries, archives, and information centers. This approach encourages active participation in information management tasks, such as cataloging, data curation, and digital content creation. By working directly with users and information systems, students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Experiential learning bridges the gap between classroom instruction and the demands of the professional LIS environment, fostering a deeper understanding of the field's challenges and opportunities

At Somaiya Vidyavihar University, students of Library and Information Science (LIS) have access to a variety of specialized libraries within the campus, including the central library, departmental libraries. These libraries offer diverse collections, from academic books and journals to digital archives and e-resources, providing hands-on experience in managing different types of information systems. Students can explore various library management practices, cataloging systems, and digital tools in real-time settings. This exposure fosters a deeper understanding of information organization and retrieval across different disciplines. Additionally, the interconnectedness of these libraries supports collaborative learning and access to comprehensive resources for research and study.

The program integrates seminars, workshops, internships, and dissertation projects to enhance practical learning. Regular seminars and workshops are conducted with experts in the field, addressing current trends and technological advancements in information management. Internships provide students with real-world exposure, enabling them to apply theoretical knowledge in professional settings like libraries, archives, and information centers.
